Bollywood Workshop with Rabia Foreman 1-3pm Saturdays, June 18 and July 9 at Studio Zahiya in downtown Asheville. Bollywood dance is an aerobic, energetic, and colorful dance form based out of India. Bhangra the 80s Way! - We're putting a Bhangra beat behind a couple of the BEST 80s tracks in this series. Get your shoulder shaking, hip swinging, and big smiling happening in this choreography-based class, which will culminate in a performance at Hot Summer Nights: 80s Meets 90s on Aug. 20th. 80s Hip Hop Showgirl - It's time to bring together a montage of 80s hits to the dance floor, Hip Hop Showgirl style. Medley time - four 80s songs give us the chance to really stretch our legs and show our sparkle. If this is your favorite decade, this is the class to take, because we're gonna shake it, and shake it real good! This is an intermediate-advanced class. Blue Ridge Bal July 1-3 - Asheville is hosting its first all-balboa weekend complete with workshops and dancing. There will be 3 tracks of workshops over 2 days (including a beginner track) with world-class instructors, and the music will include Michael Gamble's Rhythm Serenaders (one of the hottest dance bands in the country right now). Mini-Meta: Stretch, Strengthen, and Move - Interested in the Metamorphosis program, but aren’t sure if you are ready to commit? Check out this 4-week “mini-meta” class, which gives you a sampler of what the full program is all about! We’ll start each class with the Metamorphosis Ritual Groove (MRG), which consists of stretching from toe to head, dancing out your chakras, core strengthening, deep breathing, and visualization in a 20 minute program you can replicate at home! Then we will dive into personal inner work, using tools such as the Enneagram, nutrition, chocolate meditation, and Ayurveda, among others. June 17-19 (Fri-Sun) FESTIVAL ... Fifth Annual Asheville Percussion Festival at the Odyssey Community School, 90 Zillicoa St. The festival will include a wide variety of hands-on workshops, such as Middle Eastern Drumming, Brazilian and Afro-Cuban Rhythms, The Art of Frame Drumming, Stylistic Approaches to the Drumset and Rhythms of Indian Dance to name a few. Other events of interest include Friday night community drumming around the fire and a Sunday morning Sound Meditation. Workshops are for all levels, beginners through advanced and those who are just curious about percussion and want to learn while having fun. The Masters Concert, featuring the musical collaborations of the visiting residency artists, will be held on Saturday June 18, 8pm at the Diana Wortham Theatre.
